We all have bad days now and again and sometimes it’s the small things (like being outdoors or planning a nice activity) that can really lift our mood.
I have an allotment in the grounds of Ballymacash Sports Academy, Lisburn. And my dream is to transform it into a beautiful cut flower patch where people can visit and pick their own bouquets of flowers to take away with them – for free.
I want to grow a stunning variety of stems to wow my visitors and create many wonderful floral memories this summer. My bloom list includes Dahlia, Cosmos, Phlox, Rudbeckia, Lisianthus, Antirrhinum, Aster, Helicrysum and that’s just a few!
There are a few different ways you can get involved:
Help me start the cut flower garden off by growing some seeds at home. I’ll provide everything you need including compost, trays, seeds and the option of joining a WhatsApp group of other growers to share garden wins and woes together.
If you’re successful with your blooms then I’d ask that you donate some of them to the allotment, you can then keep the rest to enjoy in your garden yourself!
This allotment doesn’t look after itself. It gets thirsty, hungry, pests try to come and eat the flowers and then there’s the invasion of weeds that just won’t stop.
But there’s something wonderfully therapeutic about nurturing beautiful blooms and helping them thrive. This flower-powered goodness will do wonders for your mind, body and soul-trust me.
So if you’re up for a bit of time outdoors, getting a bit mucky and lending a hand then please give me a shout.
